Augmented reality- Closing the gap in Vietnamese education

(VOV5) – Virtual reality technology is expected to make teaching more lively and effective in the future. In the 2017-2021 “Learning for children” project, the Ministry of Education and Training and UNICEF collaborated to select six schools in four localities including Lao Cai, Kon Tum, Dong Thap, and Hanoi. The project involved the application of virtual reality and augmented reality technology at two educational levels: kindergarten and lower secondary school. Recently, UNICEF and its partner the Center for Consultancy on Family Health and Community Development (CFC) organized “Applying augmented reality in education,” a training session for teachers, specialists, and leaders. Education leaders came from schools and education departments in the Lao Cai province.

Teachers share using virtual technology applications

Ta Phin Kindergarten, Ta Phin Commune, and Sapa town were selected for a training session on virtual reality technology in teaching. The selection involved localities with many difficulties, including a large concentration of ethnic minorities and only 17% of students having internet access. “UNICEF’s goal when choosing a location is to close the digital divide for the most vulnerable children and young people – especially children in remote areas, where internet and technology are limited. This is simply because children and young people in these places need UNICEF the most,” shared Ho Tran Thanh Huyen, UNICEF representative in Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Truong Chinh, Leader of the Education and Training Department of Sapa town, said that the locality is also ready for new trends in education such as the application of technology in the teaching process. The locality also wants to continue to receive support in terms of technical equipment and training from UNICEF in expanding equality in access to education. These initial supports will also create motivation for teachers and educational management teams in disadvantaged areas to be more active in the teaching process in the direction of digitalization.

Virtual reality technology is expected to make teaching more lively and effective in the future. During the training session, the UNICEF representative also presented ten 10-inch Samsung A7 tablets and 50 Homido Mini VR glasses to three schools, including Ta Phin Kindergarten, and Bat Xat Middle School and High School. In addition, the representative of UNICEF in Vietnam also visited and discussed with teachers and students about the implementation of a bilingual education program.
